Dr. Juno Thomas, a researcher at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases says the bacteria is found in products like animal products, meat, fruit and vegetables.

"The disease isn't spread from person to person. The only way you acquire the disease, is if you eat a contaminated food item. We don't know what food type is likely implicated at this time.

"The World Health Organisation promote, what they call, the five E's to safer food. It's advice about adhering to food safety practice that protects us all against the common food-borne pathogens, including listeria," she says.

The Health Department has confirmed that at least 36 people have died following an outbreak this year.
