They've had to wait almost 24 hours for their power to be restored after that substation fault on Tuesday night left more than half of Durban in the dark.

According to eThekwini Municipality, technicians discovered that the problem was at Shallcross and not Klaarwater as had been reported earlier.

A high voltage line that connects the two substations tripped - triggering that spectacular flashover.

Technicians worked around the clock to repair the damage at the Shallcross substation, describing it as extensive.

As investigations continue into the fault, Shallcross resident Pamela Singh has shared how frustrating the situation was for them.

"I called somebody to help us with our inverter because it can only last about 16 hours and now it's completely off so now we don't have any power at all. And because of no power, the pumps are not working in the reservoirs, so there's no water as well, for the whole area and we are struggling."
