Possible tariff increases for uMsunduzi
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
Some residents of Msunduzi believe the municipality’s proposal of a steep tariff increase is unfair and unjustified given that service delivery in the City has been poor.
The municipality will be seeking approval for a 10% hike of all tariffs and charges. If it gets the green light, residents will be paying more from July.
There’s already criticism that the proposed figure is way above inflation and falls outside of Treasury’s guidelines.
Cleland and Meadows Residents and Ratepayers Association Chairperson, Jacyn Fanner, says apart from the poor service delivery, money is currently tight for many families.
She says residents are outraged that the municipality thinks raising tariffs and by that much is a viable option.
"The proposed tariff hike is absolutely ludicrous considering we have people who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic, elderly pensioners and people who have not received increases due to the economy", she said.
"This shows how out of touch they are with the average citizen in the uMsunduzi area", Fanner said.
