Possible KZN mall robbery breakthrough
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Police have made a breakthrough in their investigation into the spate of mall robberies in the province.
Five people are due to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court today in connection with a recent robbery at a shopping complex at Bellair in the south of Durban.
KZN Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says they're trying to establish whether the suspects could be linked to any other mall robberies across KwaZulu-Natal.
She says though that for now they can't confirm whether the suspects are part of a syndicate.
"We cannot say it’s a linked case because it’s different groups of people…Since these ones are arrested.. but still the mall robberies are continuing, so we are going to investigate."
Mbhele says a provincial task team in Isipingo has been established to investigate the robberies.
Mbhele says they are trying their best to stop the scourge.
"I also want to add the business owners that they must beef up the security, because it’s also up to be proactive and try to increase the number of security guards who are working in their businesses," she said.
