The SA National Taxi Association says it has identified possible underlying causes for the violence that recently rocked the taxi industry in Umbumbulu, south-west of Durban.

The KZN Transport Department met with traditional leaders and taxi bosses earlier in the week -to try and get to the bottom of the conflict. The department says the issues stem from the number of units in operation and the sharing of routes.
More than 80 killings linked to taxi violence have been reported in and around the town since the beginning of the year. SANTACO’s Mathula Mkhize says have identified possible underlying causes.
"It could around areas of dissatisfaction maybe around who was elected or tariffs", he said.
"Violence is usually a last resort when there is dissatisfaction. Any of these reasons likely and are unique to each taxi association", Mkhize said.
