Portuguese fugitive to apply for bail in Durban court
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A fugitive fraudster who escaped from Portugal to Durban is expected to apply for bail in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro was arrested in Umhlanga this past weekend.
The former banker was convicted of embezzlement and money laundering in a multi-million-dollar fraud case in his home country.
But he fled, before he could start serving his 12-year prison sentence.
Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest.
Prosecutors say he made a brief appearance in court on Monday.
The matter was postponed to Tuesday for bail.
