Port Shepstone informal settlement hit by second fire

A Port Shepstone man says he's been left with nothing but the clothes on his back after a fire ripped through his informal settlement.

A 32-year-old man was killed and about 70 dwellings were razed to the ground by Saturday night's blaze at the Masinenge informal settlement.
Dumisani Deku says he was woken up by the cries of the deceased man's girlfriend.
He says the fire was too intense and spread quickly.
"We are all devastated by the fire that burnt our homes to the ground. We are still trying to come to terms with the damage caused, but unfortunately, we cannot bring our brother back to life. Although we lost everything in the blaze, losing one of our own has left us shattered."
Residents from the settlement are pleading for solutions to stop deadly fires.
Deku says they'll rebuild their homes far apart with non-flammable materials.
"If we can get more taps to be installed within the settlement, that will make a difference. That is one of the reasons why fires spread so easily because we only have one tap on the far end of the settlement near the main road. We think if we have more taps we could try fight fires using buckets."
The non-profit organisation, Ignite Revolution, has begun a collection drive for items, including blankets, mattresses, and non-perishable foods.
The group's Jessica Naicker says it's barely a month since another fire destroyed over 100 shacks.
"This area is already plagued by so much of people in dire need. They are already living in extreme poverty. The situation is saddening. It is just that watching people so hopeless and losing everything the first time and then starting to slowly rebuild with whatever people donated and lose everything again the second time."
The Ugu District Municipality says departments have been activated, and emergency relief is being coordinated.
