The Department of Health in KZN has suspended a doctor accused of raping a patient at Port Shepstone Hospital.
The department says the doctor was arrested last week, after the 20-year-old woman reported the matter to the police.
She says she was raped last month when she went to the hospital for treatment.
Spokesperson Mdu Ncalane says they're disturbed and very concerned by the news.
The doctor remains behind bars.
“What is of great concern is that the incident is alleged to have taken place with in a health facility during Women’s Month and against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to address gender-based violence, which has ravaged our country and province,” says Ncalane.
“It's a criminal which falls underneath the competent law and authorities. The department is unable to comment further suffice to mention that the alleged perpetrator has been served with a letter of suspension."
