Port Shepstone baby's mother faces abandonment charges
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
A Port Shepstone woman has appeared in court, on charges related to her alleged dumping of her newborn baby boy, in a bush last week.
The infant was rescued from a thicket in Albersville, after residents who'd heard his cries - contacted a local security company. It's thought he'd been abandoned some two days earlier.
He was rushed to hospital and a case of concealment of birth was opened. Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says a woman in her mid-30s handed herself over to police at the weekend.

The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Kara says the woman was brought before a magistrate yesterday. In order to protect the child's identity - she cannot be named.
"The accused appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court - and was released on bail. The accused was charged with the abandonment of a baby. The accused will be back in court on August 31," Kara said.
