Poor and low to middle income households urged to apply for FLISP subsidy
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Millions of rands are available to assist thousands of KwaZulu-Natal residents that do not meet requirements to get free government houses.
The KZN Department of Human Settlements says people earning between R3 500 and R22 000 can make applications to be assisted with paying their mortgage.
The department says it has established that most working residents do not know about the Financial Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) started over five years ago.

Settlement's media liaison officer Mbulelo Baloyi says people can now be assisted with funds up to R450 000.
"We work with financial institutions whereby depending on the income of the individual who has applied. We give them some money, but the threshold of the amount is about R87 000."
"Normally what happens is a person will go look for a house, and they qualify then we promise them money, they then go to the bank so the bank will be able to meet them halfway because already government has provided the subsidy."
