COSATU says Madikizela-Mandela will be remembered as one of the heroines of the 20th Century.

"She had shown incredible bravery and love for our people when she took on the apartheid regime in the darkest days of our history. She had made a few mistakes in life but those are far surpassed by the incredible actions and sacrifices that she has made for our people. The leadership she has shown when there was a timer of absent leaders. We mourn her passing and we celebrate an incredible life," the union's Tony Erenreich said.

The IFP's Mangosutho Buthelezi says Madikizela-Mandela is honoured not only because of her marriage to the late Nelson Mandela - but because of her own credentials as a freedom fighter who suffered extreme persecution by the apartheid regime.

While in a statement, the DA says the former MP stands as a bright light that shone a way forward for others.

"Even while she opposed the apartheid government, she stood for principle, and her values outlast the struggle and apply to this day," the statement reads.

Deputy National Assembly speaker, Lechesa Tsnoli says Madikizela-Mandela was a people's person.
