Political parties condemn Brian Molefe's reinstatement at Eskom

Some political parties are not impressed with the Eskom board's decision to give Brian Molefe his job back as CEO.

Molefe has resigned as an MP - after being deployed to the National Assembly by the North West ANC only a few months ago.

It was after he resigned from the power utility following the Public Protector's state capture report in which he was implicated.

Reports suggest the Eskom board took the decision after Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown last month blocked Eskom’s golden handshake of R30 million to Molefe.

The ANC says the decision is unfortunate and reckless.

Spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says it doesn't make sense.

"The ANC condemns the decisions by the board of directors of the utility Eskom to reinstate the former CEO Brian Molefe. It is important that our government must not be seen as lacklustre when it comes to issues of [the] fight against corruption, perceived or real. I think this among others - does not take seriously the public outcry about the impact of corruption in the country," he said.

The DA's Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, Natasha Mazzone says they will ask for an investigation over Molefe's re-appointment.

"The return of Brian Molefe to Eskom is a monumental disaster for the power utility which is currently in a dire state and is surrounded by swirling cloud of Gupta-linked corruption allegations. The Democratic Alliance will write to the chair of chairs Mr Cedric Frolic to ask that the Public Enterprises Committee launch a full scale parliamentary inquiry into Eskom immediately," she said.

Molefe is expected at Megawatt Park on Monday.
