Metro police spokesperson Sibonelo Mchunu says the officer - who'd been a member of the force since 2009 - served as a constable based in the Albert Park CBD, specialising in vehicle protection on an ad hoc basis.
Police say the motive is not yet known, and a case of murder has been opened.
"The department is saddened and shocked by the news that happened yesterday. And we are working with the family and law enforcement agencies to get the perpetrators. We are also appealing to the public for information that can bring the perpetrators to face the law," he said.
