Policeman injured, suspect killed in Chesterville shootout

A policeman was injured and a suspect killed, in a shootout in Chesterville, Durban, early this morning.
Police spokesperson Colonel Thembekha Mbele says that just after midnight, officers were conducting an operation in in the area when they spotted four unknown males.
"Police approached them in Nkomo Road in order to conduct a search. The suspects fled and started shooting at the police and police returned fire," Mbele says.
She says a 35-year-old police officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
"One suspect was fatally wounded, one was arrested and the others managed to escape," she says.
Police recovered a pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition.
The firearm will be sent for ballistics testing, to ascertain if it's been used in the commission of any other crimes.
The arrested suspect will be charged for attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as ammunition.
He will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon.
