Police in KZN are appealing to members of the public for information on
the robbers involved in Monday evening’s cash-in-transit heist in Umlazi that
left a civilian dead.
A cash van came under attack while travelling on the uMbongintwini Bridge on M35.
It's understood the guards had just collected money from a grocery store.
Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says Public Order Policing officers drove into the active crime scene, unaware of what was happening.
Netshiunda says they too were ambushed.
"One police officer sustained a gunshot wound on the foot and the rest of the officers tactically took cover under heavy gunfire.
“The suspects also reportedly fired several random shots and one woman, who was a passenger on a vehicle suffered fatal gunshot wounds whilst another person was rushed to hospital with a gunshot injury.
