Police shoot and wound Umlazi suspected hijackers

2 suspected hijackers are receiving treatment in hospital after being hurt in a shootout with police in Umlazi, south of Durban.

Police say 3 suspects tried to hijack a motorist on Banana Road in Q-Section on Friday evening. The suspects allegedly opened fire at the patrolling officer when he stopped to talk to the victim.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the officer returned fire in self-defence, wounding 2 suspects. Zwane says community members then came to the outnumbered officer’s aid.
He says the 2 wounded suspects were taken to hospital under police guard. A third suspected fled the scene on foot.
"They were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment under police guard. They will be charged for attempted murder as well as hijacking. Once they have been discharged from hospital they will then appear before Umlazi Magistrate's Court", he said.
