Police search for five north KZN prison escapees
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
There's a manhunt for five awaiting trial prisoners who've escaped from custody in Ngome, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
It happened earlier today.
"It is alleged that two police officers were driving their police vehicle with eleven awaiting trial prisoners from Nongoma to Vryheid Correctional Services. Some of the prisoners overpowered the police officers and caused the vehicle to stop. Five of the prisoners escaped with two firearms belonging to the police officers," the police's Thulane Zwane said.
Zwane says other officers were also called to the scene.
"The suspects are still at large and the police are still looking for them," he said.
