Police ready for any eventuality - Cele

Police Minister Bheki Cele says they will take guidance from the Department of Correctional Services regarding the possible re-incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

This comes after the Constitutional Court on Thursday upheld a Supreme Court of Appeal judgment that the 81-year-old must return to jail to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Zuma only served about two months of his 15-month sentence in 2021 before being released on medical parole.

He had been imprisoned for defying a ConCourt order that he give evidence before the state capture inquiry.

Speaking on the sidelines of the national launch of a police high density operation in Soweto on Saturday, Cele said they are ready for any eventuality.

"I spoke to the minister yesterday, I spoke to the minister this morning. They say their legal team is still trying to interpret what is supposed to happen, which could be to say he should be taken back to prison, or to say he has finished his sentence, it's up to them but ours is to get ready for whatever happens. But whatever is going to happen, is not a matter of the SAPS at the present moment," said Cele.
