Leader of the Fees Must Fall movement and former SRC leader, Shaeera Kalla was taken to hospital yesterday after she was shot allegedly by police with rubber bullets.

Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel confirmed the incident, saying: "We know she was shot nine times by police [and] being treated by campus health and taken to hospital."

Police spokesperson, Sally de Beer says the Acting National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane has directed that the facts be established.

"The Acting National Commissioner wants the facts be established, including the circumstances that led to the incident as well as the extent of their injuries," she said.

She said that the matter will be referred to the Independent Investigative Directorate, IPID, for investigation and that any police officer found to have contravened the law will be dealt with accordingly.

This comes as another investigation continues into the death of an employee of a private security company at the university.

The woman died in hospital after being affected by chemicals from an extinguisher that was released students during the protests.
