Police nab cash-in-transit 'kingpin' in KwaMashu
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Police officers have arrested a man they've described as a KwaZulu-Natal cash-in-transit heist kingpin.
The 36-year-old suspect was nabbed in a joint operation involving the Hawks, Crime Intelligence and the Durban K9 Unit in KwaMashu, north of Durban last night.
Spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the man has been linked to the murder of a 51-year-old police officer in Ginginglovu in November last year.
Mhlongo says he is also wanted in connection with a series of other cases including cash-in-transit heists, murder and attempted murder across the province.
"He was involved in a number of armed robberies around the province. We caught him in possession of three AK47s, two 9mm pistols as well as more than 350 live rounds of ammunition,'' he said.
The suspect's 28-year-old girlfriend was also arrested and will be charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms.
They are due to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Friday.
