Police Minister wants harsher punishment for rapists
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Police Minister Bheki Cele says the justice system needs to be harsh on rapists and repeat offenders.
Cele was speaking at the funeral of Uyinene Mrwetyana yesterday. The 19-year-old was a student from the University of Cape Town who was raped and murdered allegedly by a post office employee.
Her body had been dumped in Khayelitsha and was found last Monday more than two weeks after she went missing.
Cele says they will relook at the previous charges the murder accused faced.
"The president has instructed us to revisit some of these cases," he said.
"So we will be revisiting some of these withdrawn rape and sexual offence cases."
UWC student Jesse Hess was also laid to rest in Cape Town yesterday. Hess and her grandfather were murdered in their home more than a week ago.
