Gunmen opened fire on a group of people outside Buhlebethu Primary School on Saturday.

Thirty-four-year old Ncami Shange, 60-year-old Beatrice Nzama and 37-year-old Philisiwe Jili were killed.

Five other people were injured.

They'd been attending a meeting convened by the African National Congress (ANC) to finalise selection of candidates for the municipal elections.

Cele was briefed by detectives at Inanda Police Station on Tuesday.

He says they have a strong lead in the murder investigation.

He later visited the families of the victims, some of whom have told him they're worried about their safety.

"It's the fear of the unknown, especially the first family where they are people still firing some guns at night.

"Fortunately, where have the provincial commissioner here and the district commissioner who are going to look at that. The second family they fear even on the funeral day."
