Police destroy thousands of guns in Gauteng
The police minister says it would be better for the country - if in the future - only police officers and soldiers are allowed to possess firearms.
Bheki Cele was speaking during the destruction of 30 000 firearm in Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg.
Cele says when documenting murder stats - most of the people in the country are shot dead.
"Even those guns that have been surrendered here - they usually come as legal firearms. They are stolen and become illegal firearms. It would be better if one day - we have don't have private citizens having guns at all. It's a tall order going forward."
