Police deployed to Soweto following overnight looting

Gauteng police have been deployed to parts of Soweto this morning, where incidents of looting were reported last night.
Residents in some parts of the township attacked foreign owned shops, stealing stock and damaging infrastructure.

Officers say they are not sure, at this point, what sparked the looting spree.
There were clashes recently between informal traders in the Johannesburg CBD during a police clampdown on the sale of counterfeit goods.

SAPS spokesperson Kay Makhubela says authorities are still on the ground in areas including Dobsonville, Orlando and Meadowlands.
"Police managed to assist foreigners out of the area by escorting them."
Some people have said they saw shops being looted in the Tladi area, right in front of police.
