Police deployed for the Comrades marathon

KZN Police chief, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says over 1 500 police officers have been deployed to monitor safety during the Comrades Marathon Up Run today.

The 97th Ultimate Human Race began at the Durban City Hall on Sunday morning.
At least 20 000 runners are competing in the 85.9-kilometre race that will end at the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
Over 350 police officers are taking part in the race.

Mkhwanazi says the high police presence is to ensure the safety of runners and spectators.
"We are going to be policing it with police station members that are on the route from the start in Durban. They are going to be relaying and taking responsibility, so they are going to be deploying at different times until the finishing on the other side.
There are members that are going to be at the starting and after the whole group has taken off from Durban, they are going to be moving along with them until they get to the capital city of uMgungundlovu."
