Violent protests broke out early yesterday on the R66 before angry demonstrators torched farmland and property

SAPS spokesperson, Vishnu Naidoo says the situation in Umlalazi, in eShowe was much calmer overnight.

"The situation in the Umlalazi area has been stabilised and normalised due to the patrols by various disciplines of the SAPS. We are still continuing with patrols to ensure that peace is maintained," he said.

Naidoo says the attacks appear to be a response to a deadly shooting in the area.

"It's reported that two young men were fishing on a private dam in a private farm. They were confronted by an employee and asked to leave the area. When they didn't do so - the employee then contacted the security guard who when confronting them - resulted in an altercation. This resulted in the security guard shooting and killing one of those young men," Naidoo said.

The suspect's due to apply for bail next Thursday.
