A 19-year-old woman is due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Court today after allegedly dumping her six-month-old baby in a river on Tuesday.

Divers had to be called in after police received a tip-off from community members.
The police's Kholeka Mhlongo says divers found the body of the infant on Wednesday in the Umsunduzi river.
"The alleged mother said she had thrown the baby at about 3.30pm on the ninth in the Msunduzi River just behind DUT in Woodhouse Road. She kept on saying that she didn't want the baby. Even when she was pregnant, she didn't want to have the baby. That's the only reason that she's given us," she says.
