Local mother and gospel singer Delana Rawlins was gunned down in Ashburton in May last year after an argument with her former partner, Ian.

He told the Pietermaritzburg High Court they divorced in April and were trying to reconcile.

However, he flew into a rage after hearing a rumour that Delana was in a new relationship.

It came to light that several interdicts were issued against him for abusing his wife.

These supporters say they would've preferred a harsher sentence.

"This is how our country values women, how our justice system values a woman in South Africa, that we can get shot 12 times and you get a slap on the wrist.

"This man just got 22 years, with good behaviour he can apply for parole after 11 years. 10 years he'll be out, and we are left alone. Justice has failed us today."
