At the start of his trial last week, he admitted killing his wife, Delana Rawlins.

The popular gospel singer was gunned down on a road in Ashburton on the eve of Mother's Day last year.

With a clean-shaven head and neatly dressed in a white shirt and black pants, Rawlins sat quietly in the dock as he waited to hear his fate.

Judge Pieter Bezuidenhout said it was a difficult task to determine the sentencing as there were several factors to consider, including the effect on the families.

The judge noted that Rawlins had admitted to physical abusing his wife and having four interdicts against him, adding the violence was directed solely towards the victim.

Judge Bezuidenhout also indicated that the accused has no previous convictions and presents no threat to society at large.

The court heard Rawlins has an opportunity to be rehabilitated.
