Plans to stabilise Hammarsdale power following community protests
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Residents
of Hammarsdale, west of Durban can now breathe a sigh of relief as plans to
have their power restored and stabilised are underway.
This was announced by Ethekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda and Eskom following a meeting with the area's ward 5 community this weekend.
Last month, some Georgedale residents took to the streets protesting about ongoing four-hour power cuts.

It was revealed during the meeting that Eskom had implemented load reduction to the area due to an overloaded network caused by illegal connections. Eskom said those who have no illegal connections will be reconnected, but those found guilty will pay a penalty fine.
Mayoral spokesperson Mluleki Mntungwa says Eskom has committed to review the four-hour power cuts if residents use electricity sparingly.
"We are pleased that all parties including the community, Eskom and the municipality were able to find an amicable solution to the problem. Eskom also agreed that in the next two weeks, they will embark on a process of connecting legally, all household into the power grid.”
