Plans to revisit travel requirements for parents

The Home Affairs Department says it is looking into the possibility of having unabridged birth certificates included in South African passports issued out in future, instead of having a separate document.

At a question and answer session with tourism, trade and industry stakeholders in Durban yesterday, Deputy Minister Fatima Chohan said discussions around the proposal are in their early stages.

Regulations which came into effect this year require parents travelling with minors to produce unabridged birth certificates when entering or leaving the country.

Chohan says in countries such as India, details of the parents or the passport holder are included in the passport of children under 18.

"Tourists who travel from India don't require an unabridged birth certificate when they come to South Africa and clearly it is a more convenient way for travellers to then produce the necessary information that we require to implement our laws," he said.
