Dept to consult community after Ixopo library torched
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KZN Department of Arts and Culture will be consulting with the Ixopo community before deciding to rebuild a library that was burnt down there recently.
The building was allegedly torched by protestors this week.
Police say the community library in the Nokweja Location was set alight during a protest on Sunday.
A case of arson is being investigated. The department's Mack Makhathini says they will only rebuild after getting assurance from the community that the library will be safe.
"If the community assures us that they are going to protect the infrastructure that we are building in the area - then we can resume and rebuild the library.
"This will be after getting information from the community that they are going to own this project and look after the library. It costs money to build these structures - for them to be put on fire like this," Makhathini said.
