Plans to introduce new driving licence cards
Plans are afoot to introduce new driving license cards as SA’s only printing machine undergoes repairs in Germany.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says one of his priorities for 2022 is the launch of a new driving license card.
The country’s only driving license printing machine and has been shipped to Germany for repairs.
“It’s an old machine we got from Germany. No other country in the world is using that machine hence we are developing new cards that will use a new machine,” said Mbalula.
“Look when the machine broke I wasn’t here, we should have long changed this but none the less we are changing it now. While the machine is being repaired in Germany we then experienced Covid-19."
In August 2021 there was a backlog of 500 000 licenses that were not renewed due to multiple factors including the lockdown. The deadline for renewals was subsequently extended to March this year.
“I will introduce a new card that doesn’t need to be fixed in Germany. My first task when cabinet sits for the first time is to present the new cards. We are done with the security features,” added Mbalula.
