Pinetown mortuary probe: Families yet to claim deceased
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
KwaZulu-Natal Health officials say the reason why dozens of bodies have been left unattended at the Pinetown mortuary, is because families have not yet come forward.
The department's Sam Mkwanazi says those bodies have been unidentified or unclaimed bodies.
The DA in KZN called on health officials to investigate why 50 bodies had been left unattended since January.
It says the absence of the resident pathologist could be one reason for the backlog.

Imraan Keeka, the party's spokesperson for health, says the mortuary in Pinetown is not the only one affected in the province.
"Fort Napier has 30 bodies. The postmortems are done, DNA samples are taken but they haven't been afforded the proper burial. So you must begin to ask, what reasons are there. We will be engaging with the department, to get to the bottom of that," he said.
