PICS: TB march gets massive support in Durban
Updated | By Portia Cele
Dozens of residents have made their way through the Durban CBD as part of a campaign that addresses one of KZN's biggest health threats.
Durban's Red Cross Society has hosted their annual TB march which began at King Dinuzulu Park and ended at the City Hall at midday.
The organisation's KZN head, Skhumbuzo Biyela says the Integrated HIV and Tuberculosis Program overarching the march has seen massive growth in public support since its inception in 2007.
"We have the highest co-infection rate of HIV and AIDS. Our main focus is to raise awareness to increase knowledge around TB, MDR-TB, and XDR-TB amongst communities at large.
"In our society, the stigma around TB is very problematic. You find patients being reluctant to visit clinics because of misconceptions attached to the stigma.
"We have to embark on this outreach program to reduce vulnerability and support those who really need us," he said.
World TB Day is recognised on March 24.
