PICS: 'Ring of fire' eclipse seen in Durban
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Skygazers in Durban have shared images of today's partial solar eclipse - visible in central and southern Africa. See below.
The annular eclipse - as opposed to the solar eclipse - does not completely overshadow the sun.
According to the SA National Space Agency, due to the moon being 405 000 km from the Earth, it doesn't completely block the surface of the sun resulting in a ring of light around the moon - hence the the name 'Ring of Fire' eclipse.

Residents have shared images from Umlazi, the Bluff and Umbilo - south of Durban. While others have shared images of the eclipse seen in Scottburgh and Amanzimtoti.
The eclipse will occur in this region again in 2030.
While experts have also warned of the dangers of looking directly at the sun.
