PICS: Multiple snakes 'playing dead' captured from properties
Updated | By Newswatch
A snake handler has made multiple captures of the slithering reptile south of Gauteng.
The snakes had apparently moved onto several properties in the Vanderbijlpark and Midvaal areas.
Netcare 911 paramedic Nick van der Walt was tasked with catching the serpents.
Van der Walt is said to have spent several days working on the captures - under sweltering conditions.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst says all of his catches were Rinkhals snakes, also known as Hemachatus haemachatus.
"One of the many traits of the Rinkhals is to play dead with its body turned upside down, leaving its mouth open.
"All the snakes were safely released in suitable habitats far from humans."
