A local reptile expert has described how he wrestled and caught an almost 2-metre long lizard which made its way into a staff restroom at the Zimbali Coastal Resort.

Nick Evans says an employee who was about to use the loo spotted the Nile Monitor Lizard, one of Africa's largest lizards.

Evans says employees were shocked by the size of the reptile.

"She couldn't miss the lizard. People think they are crocodiles when they see them. This was a crocodile-sized lizard. It was behind the door and when I pushed the door open - he climbed up a little bit. It just stood there, staring at me. You could see that it was cared. As I grabbed it behind the head, which I normally do, it just went ballistic. I catch a lot of them. This one caught me off guard a bit. It was a lot stronger than it looked."

He says he managed to catch the lizard eventually.

"We released it in a wetland area - on the estate. Because they're really important to have around. They are harmless to humans as long as you leave them alone," Evans said.
