The suspect, who faced murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the killings in Phoenix during the unrest, said that he wasn't feeling well last week.

He died at Durban's King Edward VIII Hospital after he'd complained of suffering breathing difficulties and chest pains.

"He was transferred for Durban Management Area to the hospital after complaining about difficulty in breathing and chest pains," says the department's spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

"A detailed investigation will be launched and this will be assisted by an autopsy report in determining the actual cause of death."

The Phoenix community's Jonathan Annipen met with Jaikissoon's family.

He says they want their own probe into his death.

"What the family has called for is an independent investigation not the SAPS or justice system. They want to know why he was denied medical attention."

Jaikissoon, who previously appeared in court alongside Dylan and Ned Govender, was arrested after more than 30 people were murdered in Phoenix - in violence alleged to have been racially motivated.
