"The looting and subsequent violent unrest caused irreparable harm and damage to family, individuals and the economy," says Pastor Justin Naidoo from ABC City Forum of Churches in Phoenix.

The investigation is due to start on Monday morning, with the KwaZulu-Natal leg of the hearings set to focus on the events in Phoenix.

Thirty-six people were killed in the area in alleged acts of vigilantism.

Naidoo says they hope the hearings get to the bottom of what exactly happened.

"Deepening the impact of poverty in our country, we hope these hearings will unearth the root and cause behind it in finding the instigators as well.

"We further hope that these instigators of these violent and heinous crimes will be held to account. We are hoping that it will be able to bring closure.”
