Phoenix hydrant dry as home consumed by flames
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
A ratepayers association says if a fire hydrant next to a burning Phoenix home had water, the house would not have been completely gutted.
On Tuesday morning, firefighters found the property on Highstone Road well alight in the area north of Durban.
They hit a speed bump when the hydrant they wanted to source water from was dry, forcing them to find another supply.
No one was injured, and three dogs were saved.
Alice Govender from the Phoenix Civic and Ratepayers Association says this is not the first such incident.

Govender, who met with the affected family, says they have lost everything and are distraught.
"He was not at home. He was at work. His son was at home, however, with their two pets, and the son managed to escape together with the pets. The residents of Phoenix have been struggling for a long time with water issues.
"Despite engaging with our water department at various levels, we still don't have a regular water supply. I live in the area not too far from the burnt property, and I struggle with water issues."
