Phala Phala: Time to let Ramaphosa do his job, says analyst

Political analyst Levy Ndou says the time has come for South Africans to put the Phala Phala saga to bed.

Ndou's remarks come after the preliminary findings of acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of any wrongdoing in the Phala Phala saga.

The preliminary findings were leaked on Saturday.

African Transformation Movement leader Vuyo Zungula lodged a complaint with the public protector over allegations Ramaphosa violated the executive ethics code linked to claims by former spy boss Arthur Fraser that the president had concealed the theft of millions worth of foreign currency from his private farm in February 2020.

On Saturday the public protector’s office said the responses by the recipients of the preliminary findings would be considered before the release of the final report.

Ndou says the preliminary findings indicate that the time has come for South Africans to move on and allow Ramaphosa to do his job.

“It is important to acknowledge that and respect the work that is done by the public protector.

“This is an institution that is created to strengthen our democracy. In my view, with the time given to the public protector to look at all issues pertaining to the Phala Phala saga, one would say that this is the time for all of us as South Africans to accept the report by the public protector and allow Ramaphosa to continue doing his job that he is elected to do by South Africans.”

Ndou says he doesn't believe Ramaphosa received any preferential treatment.

“It will also assist the South Africans to acknowledge that all citizens in South Africa are equal, they should be treated equally. For Ramaphosa to subject himself to the processes of the public protector and cooperating with the public protector is a clear indication that all South Africans are equal. The should respect things that are used to strengthen our democracy.”
