Phaahla appeals for calm amid rise in monkeypox cases in SA
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Health Minister Joe Phaahla has appealed for calm after a fifth case of monkeypox was confirmed in the country on Friday morning.
"A 28-year-old male from Johannesburg - a case was confirmed through a private laboratory and samples were also sent to the NICD for sequencing," he said.
Phaahla told the media there is still no link between the five cases, which were all confirmed in the last three months.

"The team is still trying to check whether the last two (cases) might have a link because both had travelled to Europe and it looks like it was Spain. We know that Spain has already recorded more than 5 000 positive cases."
Phaahla says while there are three vaccines in the world being used to prevent the virus, there're currently no registered monkeypox shots in our country.
