Petition to stop Eskom tariff hike
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A petition to stop Eskom's tariff hike is gaining momentum
online.
More than 30 000 people have added their signatures to the document, since its launch six days ago.
The signatories are opposed to the utility's application for a 20.5% price increase. If green lighted, the hefty rise in electricity prices would take effect from April this year.
The DA, which drew up the petition, says with many households under financial strain Eskom shouldn't be given what it's asking for.
Kevin Mileham is the party's Shadow Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy.

"The cost of food, accomodation and transport continue to spike and an electricty tariff hike will only contribute to the financial distress faced by poor households.”
“The overwhelming reaction to the DA's petition highlights how callous Eskom's application truly is. As it is, Eskom can barely keep the lights on and to expect South Africans to pay more money for an unreliable service is completely out of touch."
National Energy Regulator Nersa is considering the application
