Emergency services who responded to the scene say it appears as if the pedestrian had been trying to cross the freeway when he was struck.

Motorists say the man's body could be seen lying on the grass next to the fast lane.

Netcare911's Chris Botha says the man died on the scene.

"When we arrived there we found that it was a pedestrian that tried to run across the busy highway.

"He was found lying in the centre median. He tragically died due to the severe injuries that he had sustained," he said.

Meanwhile, a woman is receiving treatment in hospital, following a separate collision this morning in Durban North.

It is understood the vehicle the woman had been travelling in crashed into the back of a taxi in Chris Hani Road, that's the old North Coast Road - near the intersection with Blackburn Road.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Meanwhile, a man was killed and a woman hurt in a crash along Albert Wessels in Newcastle last night.

ER24 paramedics say a bakkie and light motor vehicle collided head-on.

Emergency services say the man - who had been travelling in the light motor vehicle died on scene.

The woman from the bakkie only sustained minor injuries.
