The province's health officials say some patients at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital have been moved to other facilities after a fire broke out at a new block of the hospital.
Firefighters have managed to contain the fire that started this morning.
The Health Department's Sam Mkhwanazi says no one was injured.
"Patients have been evacuated and stabilised and are continuing to receive attention. Patients from the high care unit and intensive care unit are being transferred to hospitals in Durban by helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft," he said.
Meanwhile, the Chief Fire Officer at Port Shepstone Fire Station says it took firefighters two and a half hours to contain the blaze.
Selwyn Naidoo says five rooms including an IT server room have been burnt.
Naidoo says they are still on scene dampening hotspots.
"The IT server room and four other rooms were damaged. The hospital did their part in evacuating the building and mopping operations are still continuing," he said.
