Parliament Portfolio Committee reviews policing in rural KZN
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee says it's in the province to ensure police officers are on the ground in communities were crime is rife.
Members of the committee are visiting KZN this week - to assess the state of policing.
Chairperson, Francois Beukman says the latest crime statistics show that the murder rate has increased in rural areas.
"Today, we have the SAPS in Nongoma where we are getting a briefing from the station and the commander on the state of policing in the rural parts of KZN.

"We will also look at what has been done to deal with the high incidents of contact crime in terms of the latest statistics in rural KZN - highlighting incidents of contact crime as well as murder," he says.
Beukman says a team has also been established to investigate allegations made against SAPS at the Moerane Commission of Inquiry - probing political violence in KZN.
"If there are any allegations of corrupt police officers that may be implicated - those matters must be investigated as a matter of priority. We will on Friday receive a briefing form the detective services in KZN on what they're doing to address this huge concern," he says.
