Parliament debate on fuel prices set for Wednesday
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
The IFP has welcomed a decision by National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to allow for an urgent debate on fuel price hikes.
The party first wrote to the speaker in July asking for the debate - but were turned down at the time.
It wrote to Mbete for a second time earlier this month and was today told that she'd agreed to the debate.
The debate's been set down for next Wednesday.
IFP national spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, says our economic situation is dire.
"South Africans have had to suffer fixed fuel price increases this year alone, a VAT increase of 1% from 14 to 15% and a fuel levy increase in April. Whilst we are still grappling with that - we were then hit by a recession," Hlengwa said.

He says the party want the fuel levy to be suspended.
"This would be a decrease of R5,30 per litre whilst government looks for solutions and presents a comprehensive relief package to all South Africans to deal with the escalating costs of living and take us out of this recession," Hlengwa said.
