WATCH: Parents press charges over Sydenham school bullying incident
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The parents of a 15-year-old Durban pupil are pressing charges against five girls after their daughter was assaulted in the girls bathroom of Bechet Secondary School in Sydenham.
There's video footage of the attack which took place last Wednesday, apparently over a boy.
It shows the learners hurling insults at the girl before kicking her to the ground.
Another apiece of footage that has surfaced shows the pupils hitting the girl on her head multiple times.
Speaking to Newswatch this morning while waiting to speak to a magistrate at a Davenport court - the victim's mom said daughter was lured into the bathroom by one of the girls.
She says her daughter has been left traumatised.
"She's trying to put on a brave front - not wanting to show that she's scared but she is really scared. She didn't want to come to school today. She's not sleeping properly - and she's reliving this in her sleep every night," her mom said.
The school says it has suspended the five girls.
The Education Department's, Muzi Mahlambi says they are dealing with the matter, adding bullying is unacceptable.
"For now, it's better that we can suspend and expel. Before, we have had cases where we have lost lives through this bullying. It's a serious thing," he said.
