Parents of children killed in home fire receiving counselling
Updated | By Lethiwe Mdluli
The parents of two children who died in a shack fire in northern Durban are receiving trauma counselling following the tragedy.
Emergency services raced to the blaze on Valleyview Drive in Verulam last night.
They found the bodies of a 9-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy.
The Department of Social Development's Ncumisa Ndelu says the children had been left alone in the informal dwelling at the time.
Ndelu says their mother was at work while their father had rushed off to help a relative.
"The children's father had been called out by a sister-in-law who was being attacked by her boyfriend. He had gone and tried to stop that situation. Meanwhile, his own shack was on fire due to a candle that he had left burning," Ndelu said.
Police are investigating.
